    Somehow he seems a little sad. His eyes are focusing something behind the photographer... maybe eternity? He puts up a smile, but is actually thinking about something completely else...

    A mechanic with a coin belt and conductor type hat??? The greasy shirt says "mechanic", but his accessories say "not". Maybe he was pulling double duties. Great photo anyway.

    don't forget those were the days of full-service gas stations. I'd guess he pumped gas in addition to his mechanic duties.

    also, back then most service station attendants wore uniforms including peaked caps.
