Based on the news displayed in the window, this photo was taken on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1940. One of the earthquake news summaries says, "8:45 this morning. More pronounced than the one last Friday morning"; there were 2 earthquakes of note in New England in December 1940, one on the 20th and one on the 24th. 12/20/1940 was a Friday, and with the bit of Santa news also posted, it's definitely the 24th for this photo.

William Joseph Hill, one of the best known pop songwriters of that time lost his battle with alcohol abuse and died of heart failure. On Sept 24th, 1940, he performed at the Golden Gate Exposition in San Francisco. Also performing at that show; Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, and Johnny Mercer. Three months later, on Christmas Eve, he died of heart failure in a Boston hotel room. He was only 42.

Title: Hey, who took the TV's?
"I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night..."

The title should be changed. There is a woman in the crowd at left. No reason to make her invisible.

    graflex19:

Thanks for the information! There does appear to be a woman at the left.

We’ll need to change the source data so that we can keep the information we show here in Flickr and in our own catalog ( http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/catalog.html) in sync.
