Bain's photo has been inscribed with the date, 9/27/11.

A New York Times story, September 28, 1911, reported some of the events:

"Columbia University began its . . . academic year yesterday with a large entering class. . . . The real indication that college was open was the hostilities between the freshmen and sophomores. There was little of the old-time fighting, however, the nearest thing to a battle being an organized tug of war on South Field, which provided merriment for hundreds of spectators."
