Does this qualify as The Outback, or what?

On the road from Cape Crawford to Barkly Homestead in Australia's sparsely populated Northern Territory. 375 kilometres is about 285 miles.

In the Outback, you either drive a car with great gas mileage, or bring a lot of filled gas cans, apparently!

... and when you do find a place to fill up, petrol is US$1.60 per litre.
Believe it or not I came across a group of five young English backpackers in 38C degree heat (around 100F) standing around a 20 year old car they were travelling in that had a loose exhaust pipe which had melted their tail lights. No-one was wearing a hat. I don't know if they had water. What I do know is that one of the group had walked into a store in the town of Borralloola the day prior and collapsed on the floor from heat stroke.
Thanks Christina, Mike and Ursula for your comments.
