Eared Grebe - juvenile

Some grebes appear pretty drab in winter, at least when compared to their striking breeding plumage. The juvenal Eared Grebe sports some rather pleasing browns. Here we see the steep forehead, "upward" look to the bill, and the high-riding stern - all features that help distinguish Eared from Horned Grebe. Note the eye is more of a yellow-orange at this stage. Known as the Black-necked Grebe in Europe.
