    These are good but they are so derivative of Rene Gruau it is hard to estimate them as more than work done within the shadow of another master. Maybe that is too harsh, I do see some unique lines here but I must admit I can't see these images and limited color palettes without immediately thinking of Rene Gruau...

    Merle was in his early 20s at the time and, as a young professional fashion illustrator in NYC, under the spell of Gruau and Eric. I think he shed the influence within a few years - or at least matured into something he could more comfortably call his own style, based on some of the other examples you see here... though he admits he was not focusing on personal growth -- he was interested primarily in making LOTS of money.

    No crime in that. My early stuff reeks of McKean and Manara.
