Chooser of the Slain

Valkyrie, in Old Norse means, "Chooser of the Slain". I decided to take a more dark approach to building a Valkyrie.

Watch the video to see the wings move.

This was built for the MOC Olympics on MOC Pages.

Tyler Looking back over the comments on your entry, I can really see what you are saying about the odd judging criteria. As I said before, there may have been some politics involved. From my experience with the judges who voted against you, I can track two of the four judges to Leda in one way or another. Another aspect is I bet they might be a tad jealous of your apparent skill. In effort to perhaps "take you down a notch" they voted against you. I may be sticking my neck out a little far on this comment, but I really get fed up with the politics and cliques that are so common on MOCpages.

I agree with with your judging criteria, as do most seasoned FOLs who understand the science behind a good build and presentation. While the judge apologized and reworded his comment, there is still the trace that he did indeed judge you upon your previous creation which is rather tragic.

I am rather flattered that you think so highly of me and my creations. I partly agree on the outcome of my Round 3, but I really liked the guy that I lost to so it wasn't nearly as bad as it could've been. Plus it cleared up more time for some CCCC :)

Ultimately though, you are behaving yourself with a professionalism, courtesy, and humility that is becoming of your character.

Blake Baer I didn't realize there was so much politics involved on MOCpages. I try to avoid most arguments or politics when it comes to Lego. I'd prefer to not make assumptions based on no real facts, but if you've seen politics involved in the past, I'm sure it's always a possibility. We've probably all heard rumors about other builders and their behavior but that's not going to effect how I look at that person's art (unless it's offensive in some way). It is disheartening if that is the case here. One's opinions about a person, should not bleed into their opinions of their art.

Thanks. I appreciate that you appreciate my efforts to be tactful...something that is oftentimes lost both in face-to-face conversations and even more in online conversations. Everyone should be able to express their frustrations with courtesy and tact regardless of how the other party acts. I try to avoid saying anything that I wouldn't say to the person face-to-face.

Lol Lego drama. That would probably be why I've never joined Mocpages.
  • Wimbê 3y

    Ironsniper Yup, same here.
  • Ben 3y

Ironsniper Only reason I joined was because I wanted to participate in MOC Olympics...

Tyler Blake Baer I'm really glad you both can point to how God is using this for you. That's so much more important than being able to advance another round, or always have the assurance that you'll lose fairly. Actually I think its awesome that God will use almost anything to redirect our time to focus on him. I've been grateful to see Him bless both of your work, even behind the scenes when you don't know it. :)

...wait, where the hell did that come from
    *reads rest of conversation*
No, seriously... where the hell... I don't even... wat

Shadow Viking MocOlympics on MOCpages. Head to head tournament style competition. Round 4: Me vs Leda Kat. Category: Norse Mythology. This is my entry. This was her's. I lost. End of story :\
  • Shadow Viking 3y

That is lame on so many levels.
  • Chris Malloy 3y

Hmm. This is fascinating. I was wholly unaware of any of this, until I read this thread just now. I haven't been following the competition on MOCpages (haven't hung out there in years), but you already know what I think of your MOC, Tyler. But (having not read any of the comments/threads on MOCpages, and so being ignorant of any possible politicking), I don't think that it's quite as cut and dried as all that. Leda's MOC is quite good. It's well-made, with some really clever parts usages. I think it's conceivable that a judge, in all good faith, and with no bias, could prefer it. I personally wouldn't choose it over this, as I think it lacks that suave polish and subtle minimalism your creations/presentations tend to have, but I don't think foul play was *necessarily* at work here.

On a more personal note: bummer that you lost. :( That stinks.
  • Tyler 3y

Chris Malloy Don't get me wrong, I don't think that Leda's MOC is bad in any way. My main complaint would be how it suits the Norse mythology category. It's only tangentially connected to the category and it's a depiction of a film's interpretation rather than Leda's. My understanding of the category was to build your own interpretation of an aspect of Norse mythology. I also don't think that there was any foul play but according to Blake it has been an issue in the past. Realistically it's a possibility whenever a contest is being judged.

It's all for the best. I really, really don't have time to build anything else for it anyway.
  • Shadow Viking 3y

Leda's MOC is eye-searingly bright; the use of trans elements as non-trans surfaces bugs me as well.
  • Andrew Somers 3y

Shadow Viking My biggest problem was that a good majority of it was tiles. I didn't see too much creativity in that respect. If it was snotted, then yes, I could've seen more in the build but as it stands...
  • Shadow Viking 3y

Yeah it was pretty much tilespam everywhere. I don't think generic sideways brick SNOT would have been better personally. The tiered stage is kinda neat though.
  • Andrew Somers 3y

Shadow Viking I'm talking about it in a sense of incorporation. Any builder can tile up something given a vast collection. To be able to incoporate walls, a stage, and etcetera takes a bit more skill to do.

Though I will agree that the stage was nice. Probably the best part of it. (For me)
  • Shadow Viking 3y

    Andrew Somers Yes? I agree... ^^ :P
  • Andrew Somers 3y

    Shadow Viking loledit.

  • Petr Stuchlý 3y

    wowowowow! overly amazing!

Overall a beautiful image with all the perfect effects and attributes.

Looks too manly to be a Valkyrie, but cool nonetheless
