Norefjell Sastrugi

    Newer Older

Sastrugi in late morning light near Ranten (1419 m./4655 ft.) on Norefjell mountain range, Norway. March 2011.

Knowing that this location have had a lot of wind during the winter, I hoped to find interesting snowdrifts (sastrugi) during my 2-day ski trip on this mountain range. It turned out to be a 2-day long study of sastrugi only.
Massive shapes, knife-sharp edges and otherworldly beauty witnessed the invisible, yet powerful wind.

This photo is truly great. Although the snow/ice isn't that different in color from the sky, the contrast of textures is extremely compelling. Really wonderful.

I came across the same patterns in the snow when I was in Trysil a few years ago.
