What does immigration mean?
First grade classes read a series of books on immigration including A Gift for Sadia by Marie Fritz Perry, Amelia's Road by Linda Jacobs Altman, My name is Yoon by Helen Recorvits, Painted Words and Spoken Memories by Aliki and Going Home by Eve Bunting. Ms. Filomeno asked her first graders "to sit and think for a minute about what immigration really means. They shared their thoughts, and one girl, Kimberly, said 'My mom says that America is our home, but Colombia is her home in her heart.' I asked them to draw what immigration means to them. Their beautiful illustrations and comments tell you just how much they truly understand."
