Eugene Bleil (left) is introduced by LCC Board of Trustees Chairperson Larry Meyer (right) while being congratulated by Captain Ken Beachler (center) during the annual induction of local veterans in the interactive Veterans Memorial on the garden level of the Health and Human Services Building on the LCC downtown campus Friday. Bleil, a U.S. Army Air Corps Staff Sergeant, survived the Bataan Death March, where thousands were brutally killed or died due to heat, exhaustion or malnutrition. Bleil was imprisoned in two camps before being sent to Japan as a slave laborer. He was freed September 1945. Bleil came home and became an anesthesiologist.
