Girls Expanding Their Horizons!

Each spring, the Sonoma County EYH (Expanding Your Horizons) Chapter holds a free annual conference for 7th and 8th grade students from Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino Counties. This year the conference was held at the SRJC campus.
The purpose of the conference is to increase the awareness of young women and their parents of the importance of adequate preparation in math and science. It is designed to introduce them to the world of math, engineering, and science and other fields where high school math and science are required. It consists of hands-on workshops conducted by women who have chosen a career in one of these fields. Sessions are also available for parents and educators.
Girls are assigned three of their six workshop choices selected during registration. Workshop topics included computers, architecture, biology and medical knowledge. “I know what I want to do!” exclaimed one 7th grade girl to her parents as they picked her up from this year’s conference. “I want to be a geologist and study rocks!” Another girl explained how the paper dome her workshop created out of only newspaper and tape held 104 mandarins. Both girls are looking forward to next year’s conference.
