When Mother Left Home*

"When Mother Left Home", Mixed-Media Construction, Laurie York, 1989.

Before I started plein air painting I made many mixed-media constructions. This one is about my Mother who had a series of brain tumors. She was 48 when she had her first surgery. I was six. She died when I was 13.

At the time I made this construction in 1989, I was expressing many unresolved emotions. This year I'm now the age that my Mother was when she first became ill. I look back on this piece with less sadness, more acceptance, much love and a kind of inner strength that comes from allowing myself to go full circle with my grief.
