A long kiss goodbye.
You're a shadow. You slip out of your own skin, like molting, shedding your own history and your own future, leaving behind everything you ever were or wanted or believed in.
The Things They Carried
This isn't what it looks like.
It's not a military homecoming. Instead, I was sent to shoot a going away party for a unit that is being deployed to Iraq this week. There were no joyful reunions, no tearful embraces, and very few moments like this. Mostly it was a normal dinner get together with normal soldiers and their normal families, laughing and filling their plates with barbeque and banana pudding.
But there was also this unspoken knowledge that a week from now these men and women will be alone in Iraq, away from their families, wishing they were back at this party toting around and smooching their six and a half month old daughters.
