natasha dropping coins from the il porcellion fountain at the south end of the market is the 17th century bronze copy (pietro tacca) of a Roman marble statue. there is a superstition that any visitor that rubs the boar's nose will return to florence one day. coins dropped from the boar's tongue into the fountain are given to the city's charities.

the mercato nuovo [new market], sometimes called the straw market was designed as a covered market place for silk and luxury goods in 1547, it is now filled with lots of expensive leather and other souvenir stalls
