A tree stands alone on the wide open prairie outside of Gildford, Montana.
Every serious photographer, it would seem, has a favorite tree. It's a tree we visit again and again, in every season, and at different times of the day. For the most part, the tree remains the same, but as the ingredients and elements surrounding it change, so too does the photograph.
It has taken me a long time to find a favorite tree here in Montana. Eastern Montana doesn't have many trees. And what few trees do grow on the open prairie, most are cottonwoods, which aren't necessarily the most photogenic tree in the first place.
I stumbled onto this tree while driving around aimlessly west of Havre on a Sunday morning. I'm not sure what species it is, but it didn't take long for me to realize it would become my new favorite tree here in Montana.
