Elegant Take-Off (pelican_DSD4495.jpg)
Another American White Pelicans shot. As mentioned, they are becoming increasingly more common in Alberta. This is especially true during the early spring when the fish begin spawning in rivers in Southern Alberta and the Pelicans arrive just in time to take advantage of it. This shot was taken on the Oldman River (again at sunset), and using an old large tree near the shoreline as a blind that allowed me to view these birds up close and get some fairly intimate shots.
This one is another of my favourites from the series of a few days of shots due to the background colours and detail in the water "splash" spray as it took off. The pelicans would sometimes go above the wier and then float down and elegantly take off as they started to float over the edge and I wanted to try and capture them as they began to take off halfway over the edge... you can still see the splash at the edge where it took off. As with most of my wildlife images, unless it is noted, it is uncropped, as this image is.
