If you buy a Vespa that was "restored" in Asia your taking your life into your hands.
Your better off just stepping out into traffic with $3500 in your hand and getting run down by a bus!.

Great work my friend. Pretty disgusting to see how people cheat in this world. That too with life. I vote against buying such cheap stuff. "No Viet-Vespa"

Hao-Nhien,

I would be happy to talk with you.

All that I need from your are your reporters credentials and contact info for the website/magazine your working for.

Once I get this I will be more than happy to go on the record.

Hi Laprell,

Great series mate. I actually bought my Vespa while living in Asia and took it to what I thought was a reputable shop myself, run by a fellow Aussie, to have it restored there and then shipped.

While the paint is fantastic and I have no joins as such and can run a magnet across my vespa's body, (more than I can say for my 63 Chrysler Valiant!!), my issues have all been with the uneven wear and total destruction of 4 new Italian hubs and 4 sets of Italian rear brake shoes.

Mind you I have also managed to get 5500km out of my Viet Vespa, before I refused to spend any more money on hubs and brake shoes.

I have now removed the engine myself and found the flywheel oversized and shimmed, a dodgy axle, homemade flywheel cover (not sure where my original went?) and have not yet cracked the casing!

There will be some pics soon from this experience in my stream.

I am now looking for an original px200 engine to go in my scooter, so I know it will be safe and reliable.

I'm sorry to say that I have dropped a bunch of cash so far and in retrospect would have been better off, but thought that I had avoided the traps by not buying on ebay and doing as much as I could myself.

Feel like a sucker actually as I did lots of research.

However, this 'Viet dodge' will continue as long as the prices seem attractive and we don't raise the issue as much as we should and you have here.

Thanks for your insights and pics...now to find reasonably priced classic scooters in Australia that don't also send us broke!

Regards,

Rob S
