Portrait of a Lady in a Frame of Asymmetrical Designs

Acrylic on wooden panel, 10” x 10.” I saw a Twitter thread the other day about how the famous painting Portrait of Madame X by John Singer Sargent was poorly received when it was shown in Paris, because of the blue tint of the woman’s skin and the shocking cut of her dress. Apparently the reputation of the model, a famous beauty named Virginie Gautreau, was absolutely ruined by the scandal the portrait caused. This painting is tangentially inspired by that dress and that skin, and the intriguing detail that Madame Gautreau positively would not sit still for the portrait and kept lying down on the sofa and rushing around.
