A commissioned portrait of a friend’s mother. She appeared on the cover of Femina magazine in 1966. The image made me think of Usha Priyamvada’s 1963 novel Pachpan Kambhe Lal Divarein, which I am currently translating. Women do so much creative work with clothing and personal adornment, an aspect of feminine life that is captured in detail in women’s literature and seen as superficial or intended for male enjoyment in writing by men. Usha Priyamvada captures the meaning and nuance of women’s fashion of the era with such delicacy and precision and helped me paint this particular portrait (obviously embellished with my own imaginary flourishes).
