FA Trophy Final - Wembley 23-03-14
Cambridge United overcame Gosport Borough in the FA Trophy Final at Wembley on Sunday. United proving too strong for the Skrill South side by coming out as 4-0 winners.
Gosport had a lot of possession in the opening 20 minutes, without troubling Will Norris in the U's goal. United took the lead with a sublime chip from Ryan Bird over the advancing Gosport keeper on 38. From there on, United controlled the remainder of the half and went in 1-0 up at half time.
United started the second half strongly and their efforts were rewarded with a Ryan Donaldson goal on 50. A superb through ball from Liam Hughes fell onto Donaldson's foot as he rounded the keeper to slot home from the left hand side.
Donaldson found the net again on 60 after some Keystone cop defending from Gosport, the ball pinging around the area until Donaldson placed the ball in to the net from 12 yards. The final goal came from the penalty spot after Andy Pugh was upended in the six yard box by Gosport's Danny Smith. Luke Berry calmly slotting the ball home on 78.
United saw out the rest of the match without much incident apart from a slight scare when the ball skipped off the crossbar close the end.
