Life, Death and Rebirth
89-0-60 ... Pike National Forest, Colorado, USA, 10-6-2011.
The stark black sticks in the foreground are apparently trees that were completely burned in the Oxyoke forest fire in 2008. ... On the horizon you can see that the fire apparently damaged only the bottom half of many trees, ... while the top half stayed alive. ... On the ground you can see young pine trees and new green vegetation. ... And it appears that new Aspen trees have sprung up in the foreground. ... Life, death and rebirth.
The fire was reported on july 20, 2008 at 12:20 p.m. along Highway 67, which is a dirt road that runs along the South Platte at that point. ... The blaze, dubbed the Oxyoke Fire, was estimated at 149 acres in size ... Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles before it subsided in the evening as winds died down.
Seen on our drive to view the Fall colors, ... just before the colors completely faded. ... It took a visit from my wife's sister and her husband from Minneapolis to trigger the outing.
We drove south from Denver to Sedalia and then headed west on Highway 67 toward Deckers. ... It was 24 miles of winding roads, hairpin turns and constant steering. ... Much of the route was gravel, but well maintained.
We had lunch in the big city of Deckers, population three !
Then we took 126 north to 285 and home.
