A Demonstration Of Enhancing Old Photos

    Newer Older

1,621-3-60 ... COMPARE TO ORIGINAL PHOTO BELOW

Or see the original photo by my Flickr friend "drakegoodman" at www.flickr.com/photos/drakegoodman/6096200892/

I downloaded his photo and enhanced it to bring out detail in the black shadows. ... He gave me permission to post it here, in my photostream.

I used Apple's "iPhoto" that came with my new iMac computer. ... Other software can maybe do the same thing ... but ONLY if it has a feature called "Highlights and shadows". ... It's the "shadows" part that I love because it brightens the shadows to reveal whatever is hidden in those pitch black areas ... without touching the rest of the photo. ... If you simply brighten the photo it MIGHT reveal details in the shadows BUT it may make the rest of the photo too bright.

This is most important to people like me who build model airplanes and worry about accuracy of details, ... or just like to drool over the details in an airplane photo.

But it can improve "regular" photos too, like this: www.flickr.com/photos/landoni/6080583436/

Adobe Photoshop has the "Highlights and shadows" feature but it costs an two arms and three legs.

By the way, the plane is a World War One German Fokker E.III (LF 196) airplane belonging to Leutnant zur See Gotthard Sachsenberg of Nr 1 Marine Feldflieger Abteilung.

Nice work on the edit, and if you really enjoy enhancing photos I really encourage you to check out Adobe Lightroom. Ever since I started using it I hardly use Photoshop anymore. Lightroom is the equivalent to what we used to do in the darkroom... brightness, contrast, cropping, spot removal, etc. For me now, Photoshop is used for actual image editing... replacing heads, removing distracting elements from the background, etc. Lightroom has some amazing controls, one is called "fill light" that lightens the shadows without effecting the rest of the image. And compared to Photoshop, I think it only costs $129, amazing value. Let me know if you ever have any questions, and there are a lot of YouTube video tutorials and demos of it as well.

Keep up the great work on restoring these aircraft images, I love them!

... My sincere apology for not seeing your comment until now ... 8 months late ! ... I hate it when that happens ! ... I really appreciate the time you took to write out your compliments and suggestions ! ... I continue to use Apple iPhoto for most of my photo enhancing. .. As stated under the photo it has the "shadows" feature which lightens the shadows without affecting the rest of the image. ... It also has "highlights" which dims overly bright areas without affecting the rest of the image. ... I purchased "Pixelmator" to do more exotic things but haven't mastered it yet:
