Crotalus horridus (Canebrake Rattlesnake)
East Louisiana - Summer 2014
Coming back up on a ridge we had already explored, I went down the ridge and around to the shaded part of some deadfall on a slope. As I peered up, I caught a glimpse of the coils of this small male canebrake. Laying in ambush, it initially made no movements, but when we started crowding around for photographs it eventually began to feel threatened and started to warm up it's warning signal, and the sharp drone of the rattle began to drown out the noises of the forest.
