Farancia abacura reinwardtii (Western Mudsnake)
Colorado County, Texas - Spring 2014
Seldom seen through it's range, and usually only under the influence of a large storm system, this secretive serpent was found crossing a dirt road intersecting a high quality coastal prairie.
Prior to a DOR I found a week earlier, I was unaware that this snake extended this far west, at least in any density that I would allow me to find one. It was quite the pleasant surprise then that this crossed my path, after I had been lamenting missing the prime mud snake hunting period that would have accompanied a large storm system that passed through in the early hours before dawn a couple days before this snake was found.
