Lampropeltis calligaster calligaster (Prairie Kingsnake)

Chambers County, Texas - Spring 2014

This prairie king is the only one I've seen do the head ticking that is common of calligaster on the east coast.

Between bouts of head ticking, this young adult prairie king would flatten it's head and strike at me, violently, advancing with each strike.

One such strike made contact with my finger, at which point the snake would not let go, and began to constrict my hand. This continued for several minutes.
