Lampropeltis calligaster calligaster (Prairie Kingsnake)
Austin County, Texas - Spring 2014
After two years of trying to find a live specimen of the prairie king in this county, I finally succeeded. I've spent countless hours road cruising, flipping, and hiking. I've seen several DOR specimens. I've set up tin, boards, and carpet in every bit of prairie I could set it in. Yet despite their abundance, I had not yet found a live one before today.
Of course, after finding this one, I subsequently found three more crossing a road, just the next county over. That was also an area I had been searching and failed to locate a live specimen!
