Coluber flagellum testaceus (Western Coachwhip)

Austin County, Texas - Spring 2014

After trekking approximately a mile back into private property, we arrived at our destination, this high quality stretch of prairie. Having spread out some boards here last year, I was eager to see what might lie under them. While I missed out on seeing my target prairie king, this very attractive, banded, western coachwhip was found, just as the sun was beginning to sink below the horizon.
