For Twelve Significant Photographs: I was enjoying a brisk, damp summer day in Ocean Shores when I came upon this discarded Coke can in the middle of a vast expanse of sand. I somehow got the idea to invert the scene, making the little can dominate the landscape instead of be diminished by it. I was pleased with the result in no small part because I rarely do this sort of photography; the subjects of my compositions are almost always people. Still, without the litterbug who donated the can I would not have thought to make this photograph. So perhaps the can is a worthy stand-in for the people and civilizations who so thoroughly dominate this planet despite being dwarfed by the immensity of it.
