Hilo, Mars, and Lava

Looking down towards Hilo from Mauna Kea on the evening of August 1st, the red glow of Fissure 8 and the lava river radiates up into the late twilight sky. The city of Hilo can be seen wrapping around Hilo Bay on the left, imparting more of a sodium light glow into the low clouds above. Shining radiantly in the deep blue sky almost exactly above Fissure 8 is Mars, standing out against the pale distant stars. The scene was something to behold.
