Phyang - Ladakh
In August and September 1999 I lived for two months in the Ladakhi village of Phyang with a local family to help them harvest. In less than two months time, all the cereals and vegetables have to be harvested because in early October, it begins to freeze at night.
Since most youngsters move to urban areas to find a job, the older villagers do not have enough manpower to handle this job.
The Leh-based Ecological Development Center therefore recruits volunteers to help the families during the harvesting season. Volunteers have to pay for their accomodation and food, because the host families are very poor.
