6/2/10 Armchair Traveling
Perhaps this is obvious by now, but few things (okay, also Eric, and coffee, and books) fill me with as much happiness as maps. I love tracing the lines, imagining journeys, and pondering all kinds of spatialities. I bought this map in Dubrovnik several years ago, fresh off a ferry from the gorgeous islands. I have never seen such clear blue water as I did that day in the Adriatic. This map is clearly antique, imposing a fine layer of temporality on it, which made it all the more enticing to me. Come to think of it, almost every time I've gone abroad, I've come back with maps rolled up in my suitcase. On days when I can't explore bazaars and drink mint tea in the shade and wander through medieval castles, a map is the next best thing--it brings those things to me when I can't go to them.
