Jan Ullrich - september 2011

    Jan Ullrich portrait

Got a phonecall from the other side of the globe if I wanted to portray Jan Ullrich when he was visiting the (huge) bike-expo Eurobike (south-Germany) in september 2011.

I've always been fascinated by him, so 'yes' it was. From what I knew he didn't give much photo-opportunities. I hadn't seen many (recent) pics of him in the previous years anyway...

I also anticipated on meeting a rather shy, well-fed ex cyclist. Boy was I surprised at seeing him this fit!
    Extremely nice guy too.

After being involved in the Fuentes-case Jan retired as a procyclist in 2007. +5 years later he is being suspended from competition for 2 years by TAS. I don't think that will change much for Jan...

He seemed like a content guy.

Jan was always my favourite ride and will continue to be. "Der Kaiser" was always the underdog to the Lance machine and my wife and I always rooted for him during the Tour. Nice to see a great portrait of the man. Great work in your capture.

Great! Jan was (and is) the biggest. Jan 'The Locomotive of Rostock' Ullrich.

Jan may have done wrong, however, I think that he has been very much abused by the processes of the governing bodies- almost to the polar opposite degree than what has been happening with the Contador issue. Jan seems to have been hated and Alberto loved. I am glad that he isn't down on things and still (hopefully) enjoys the sport that he has been given such gifts of ability. Very nice portrait!
