Fat Sand Rat (Psammomys obesus)

The sand rat is an interesting animal of arid regions that, unlike most desert-adapted animals, follows a high water intake/high water loss approach. It manages this by eating saltbush plants, which are water rich but low in energy. The result of this is frequent urination, and this in turn leaves a scent trail for the numerous predators that eat this animal, including raptors, foxes and snakes.
