Desert Dog Looking for Trouble

Our dog, Mica, loves to hike in the Arizona desert. There are places we go that are isolated and we feel comfortable to let her roam off the leash. While she usually gets ahead of us, she knows enough to stop and wait.

Last Saturday, however, on our way back down the trail we lost track of her. I called for her. Nothing. I whistled and heard a faint bark from behind us. Heading back up the trail, every time I whistled I heard a responding bark. But being in a canyon, the sound reverberated and I couldn't tell from which direction it was coming.

After about 10 minutes I finally located her--on the other side of a sharp ravine, caught in a thicket of brambles. It took me another 5 minutes to descend the steep ravine and climb above where she was caught.

Using my walking stick I was able to push enough of the brambles aside, giving her enough wriggle room to turn herself around to where she could climb up on the small opening I had created.
