A rare wax cylinder recording of Ishi

In the summer and fall of 2007, Carl Haber of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Andrew Garrett of UC Berkeley’s department of linguistics and Victoria Bradshaw of the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology at UC Berkeley selected 12 rare wax cylinder recordings from the early 1900s to see if Haber’s confocal microscopy scanning device could extract audio information from the vertical grooves indented in the cylinder. Here is one of those cylinders, containing a recording of a myth by Ishi, the last surviving member of the Yahi Indian tribe. Image Source: Sheraz Sadiq
