We found him walking across the driveway of of my sister's house in Hoover, Alabama. We put him on the back porch for a while where I took this photo. He never would come out of the shell fully as long as we were watching.

 

I'm assuming it's an eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina). If anyone wants to correct my identification, feel free.
