Last shot in my series of zoo pics using my new 100/2.8L macro. Fill flash using 580EX-II in high speed sync. Love the light on the little fella.

The prairie dog display at the National Zoo has no glass or fence to separate the visitors from the animals. They literally come into petting distance (not sure I recommend trying to touch them given the size of their teeth). They do not seem to mind humans at all, but one small bird flying above and they are gone - back into their holes!

Prairie dogs are a type of ground squirrel. They are found in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Prairie dogs are named for their habitat and warning call, which sounds similar to a dog's bark.
