Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera)

    Newer Older

Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera). Male. Guango Lodge, Papallacta, eastern Andes, Ecuador. One of many different species of hummingbirds we encountered on our trip to Ecuador. This spectacular hummingbird has a bill about 90-100mm (3.5-4") long, and has evolved to feed from flowers with long corollas, particularly Datura flowers.

Wow!!! That's really cool, I've never seen one of these kinds before. Just so beautiful and what a long long beak. I'm always thrilled to see one I've never seen before.

Just an idle thought, I wonder if the tongue is the full length of the bill? And whether it uses the bill as a weapon?

Thanks again everyone - these sword-bills are amazing. How they manage to manoeuver around without bashing into things is beyond me, but they do.

My understanding is that not only does the tongue run the length of the bill, like most birds it's actually attached to the back of the head, and can extend beyond the end of the bill. If anyone has any more info on this I'd appreciate it.
