USS IOWA (BB-61) is home in San Pedro

Daily Breeze photo: I'm thrilled I was on this journey, and being able to say I was on her decks on that historic day; a part of me wanted badly to see her from the water, though! I even told someone it would be perfect if I could climb down a rope ladder, to a rigid-hull Port Police or Coast Guard boat, to get MY OWN photos from the water.....

..... But thanks to the local newspaper photographer from the Daily Breeze, this and some of these other shots ably portray that view of this once-in-a-lifetime event.

The last battleship: USS Iowa (BB-61) with her guests, a fleet of tractor tugs, A huge LA City Fire boat, Port Police, Coast Guard, helicopters, tallships, yachts, motorboats, and thousands of onlookers, made her way to her new home, berth 87 in the Port of Los Angeles (POLA), and her new home town of San Pedro, California (About :30 South of Los Angeles downtown... at the 'right' time of day!).

I'm thrilled I was on this journey, and being able to say I was on her decks on that historic day; a part of me wanted badly to see her from the water, though! I even told someone it would be perfect if I could climb down a rope ladder, to a rigid-hull Port Police or Coast Guard boat, to get MY OWN photos from the water. I even know my firefighter pals on Fireboat 2 would again let me ide with them; BUT I and my camera would've been soaking wet, in water fountains that also blocked their view if the warship! So much for wishes, I think these Daily Breeze shots ably portray that view of this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Maybe I can soon begin to do some traveling, which I've missed a lot. But having the experience is something I would not have wanted to miss. I'm very grateful.
