Kirk Douglas - Ace in the Hole (1951)

Billy Wilder's cynical 'Ace in the Hole' (later renamed 'The Big Carnival' - 1951).

Storyline: Charles Tatum, a down-on-his-luck reporter, takes a job with a small Albuquerque

New Mexico newspaper. The job is pretty boring until he finds a man trapped in an old Indian

dwelling. He jumps at the chance to make a name for himself by taking over and prolonging

the rescue effort, and feeding stories to major newspapers. He creates a national media

sensation and milks it for all it is worth - until things go terribly wrong.

In this photo with Kirk Douglas is the great character actor Ray Teal, playing Sheriff Gus Kretzer..

Among many roles, Teal played Sheriff Coffee in the TV series 'Bonanza'.

Interesting note: Nearly all of this 1951 movie was filmed on a huge set in the remote. tiny little New Mexico town of Manuelito. The movie did not do well at the box office.... under either title...

yet 10 years later, also in New Mexico, Kirk Douglas would star in a movie that he calls his personal favorite: "Lonely Are The Brave".
