Best Word Book Ever - Kitchen

(1963 on left, 1991 on right)

Once again, Father is inserted into the kitchen.

Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, 1963 vs 1991 editions (with revisions). The 1963 edition is my own, bought for me in the late 60's when I was a toddler, and read to tatters. The 1991 edition belongs to my kids today. I was so familar with the older one that I immediately started noticing a few differences, and so have catalogued 10 of the more interesting differences here in this collection.

  • Man or Monster? 9y

Oh yes, modern mothers never cook by themselves. And men always make sure to wear their suits while frying something in a pan.
  • flip phillips 9y

Actually, I wear a suit jacket and tie, just no pants.
  • Eric 9y

I wonder how long it took the 'bits to realize they are missing a full set of drawers for their silver. What! No Bow on the father..W.W.What!
  • Somewhat 9y

It's hardly politically correct to imply that one parent of each gender living together is the norm! And is it just me, or do the new bunnies have bigger eyes in proportion to their heads, which makes them look more child-like?
  • luciferase 9y

Twilight Zone music as the new tenants of the "Children's Book" frantically search for the silverware drawer.
  • Richard Navarrete 9y

Fathead Bunnies Indicative of Obese America
Besides their obviously inflated heads, notice the Mrs. Bunny's bow between the pics. The sexy Mrs. Bunny of the 1960's has more bow to tie behind her.

    thats cool
  • jilly999 8y

you can see Mother Bunny's ankles in the newer version.
  • Aaron T 8y

The newer room also has a knob on the inside door, implying that mother can now leave the kitchen of her own free will.
  • Scot 8y

It looks like the "Mother" traded her kitchen counter drawers for a "Father."
  • Chuck Lawhorn 8y

Looks like kids everywhere are still being led to believe that the word for "toaster" is "kitchen."

It's also not the same kitchen as in the house on the cover. On the cover, the kitchen is to the left of the front door, and the hood vent blows into the front hall. In this picture, the front hall is the kitchen.
  • AmazedMama 7y

Daddy's make the best pancakes anyway.
  • Jamie 7y

neither mother nor father has a job now!
  • Thistle Dubh 5y

I see the clock has lost it's second hand.
  • Laura Dexter Lance 4y

mother and father became proper nouns
  • The Phantom 4y

Where is the microwave..? How can I cook my pizza..!
  • Gabriel Meister 4y

    Great posts -- thanks!
  • Gabriel Meister 4y

Mother and Father are capitalized, as if they were proper nouns/names and not just "mother" as a thing.
  • Lewgad 2y

Begemot said "The mice are less cute in this redrawn version." That's because they are rabbits. Also, does this mean Mother will cut the lawn next... just saying, Father IS helping with the cooking.
  • Lewgad 2y

EVERYBODY knows SAFETY means that: pot handles are turned inward... man, I can just see junior rabbit with a scalding!
