London Mela (2012) 02 - Bollywood Brass Band

19th August 2012 at Gunnersbury Park (Community Stage), London W3.

London Mela (free event), www.londonmela.org/.

Country: Britain. Style: Brass Band - Bollywood.

Lineup: Sarha Moore (soprano sax), Kay Charlton (trumpet), Steve Pretty (trumpet), Tom Marriott (trombone), Dave Jago (trombone), Alice Kinloch (sousaphone), Jas Daffu (dhol), Rav Neiyyar (dhol), Philippe D'Amonville (snare drum), Nick Cattermole (bass drum).

The band came together through a collaboration with India's Shyam Brass Band, and then carried on playing the Indian film music they learnt from them. As a blogger on the website Indian Currents says they bring wedding band music full circle: “Once played by Indians hired by English in India who wanted to be reminded of England, it is now played by English hired by Indians in England who want to be reminded of India”. Band musicians are current or past members of the Barely Works, Dhol Foundation and bands playing Higlife, Klezmer, Jazz, R’n’B, etc.
