I thought this was the first skyscraper in NYC, but I was WRONG. The first was the Tower Building, which was 11 stories high and only stood for 26 years.
The next skyscraper was the Flatiron Building, in 1901, at 22 stories (twice as high!).
But the Woolworth Building was the first REALLY TALL skyscraper, at 60 stories, and is STILL one of the 100 tallest buildings in the United States (and one of the 30 tallest in NYC).
