Prickly pear

Prickly pear and agave thrive in Lesotho, as in Mexico, but these desert plants were imported by 19th century Europeans and are foreign to Basotho cooks. Some people have learned to eat the prickly pear fruits, but few know how to clean and cook the clads, called "nopalitos" in Mexico. Many people in Lesotho brew home-made beer, but they have not discovered how to distill drinks like tequila from the agave.
