Yellow Boom. Red Boom.
A portion of these photographs have been revisited on April 20th, 2015 the five year anniversary of the Deep Water Horizon tragedy in 2010. Owned by BP this offshore drilling rig was responsible for the largest marine oil leak in US History. The deadly explosion killed 11 and critically injured 17. The broken pipe was not effectively capped until the 19th of September. During these three months a staggering 4.9 million barrels of red crude oil and natural gas poured from the faulty pipeline. BP was found guilty of gross negligence and so far has paid $5 billion in settlements to the limping coastal economy. As of today the environment is still left reeling from the Gulf catastrophe. The repercussions of this 210 million gallon spill have been so long lasting that marine life killed by oil poisoning, large tar balls, micro-particles encased in a chemical dispersant (banned in Europe for birth defects) are still washing ashore as far as Florida.
