Hello Quokka

Quokkas are yet another almost impossibly cute marsupial that live only in Australia. This little guy was sleeping under a shady tree but when I sat down he decided to wander out to say hello. The island was given the name "Rottnest" (meaning "rat's nest" in the Dutch language) by the Dutch fleet captain Willem de Vlamingh on 29 December 1696. How De Vlamingh could mistake these cute macropod marsupials as rats, I can't imagine. They are a bit like a smaller, chubbier, fuzzier kangaroo.
