Locke's Karangahake Gorge
This is a close-up of the piece I put up yesterday. It shows the #d aspect of it: The water goes under the bridge, the foreground is a concrete and pebble promenade with copper struts suspended above the water. I really wanted to emphasize the hard work, the brutal conditions, remember the hundreds of deaths from lung disease, mine collapses as with the recent Pike River tragedy. Where we live the people are tough, good, sharp as tacks, great engineers, resourceful in so many ways, salt of the earth; in fact the Labour movement in NZ came out of Waihi and the West Coast of the South Island, so these people have contributed enormously to the development of this beautiful smart country. Amen.
