I finally decided to try and find out what this picture had looked like before the years of ravage had removed much of the darker silver from the image. My first thought was to fill the hollowed-out areas with black, but the results were not promising. I ended up using the clone tool to put various shades back where they seemed appropriate. I had no idea the picture would come out this way.
