loss is a measure of beauty

“Life is a perpetual yesterday for us.” - Alice Sebold
[While driving to Akaka Falls on Kona, I pulled the car over at this beautiful, expansive grass field. Alongside Lizzy, Austin, and Rob, we clambered through hidden lava rock and shot picturesque sweeping plains in the broiling sunlight. I kept waiting for clouds to momentarily shroud the sun to soften the lighting a bit--scampering off and huddling inside the shadow of a nearby lava rock. In the end, I used a photo that had some of the most extreme sunlight after all. It's hard to get past the sheer beauty and diversity of this place. From plains befitting of Africa to chilly rolling hills covered in goats to otherworldly planetary landscapes to lush jungle... I highly recommend this island to anyone visiting Hawaii.
It's funny how even when we are in the most breathtaking environments, at times it's still not enough to wipe away feelings of loss, sadness, and utter loneliness. Sometimes, I feel, it's important to just embrace these feelings of despair. I allow them to wash over and through me. I accept them for what they are, and then I carry on. Because sometimes, that's all we can do, as the simple creatures we are. You know?]
