Alloway, Ayr 18-03-2008

Alloway is synonymous with Robert Burns, Scotland's bard. The Auld Kirk, the Brig O' Doon, Burns cottage, Tam O'Shanter, it's all here.

The Maidens & Dunure Railway also passed through, this is the tunnel under Alloway Auld Kirk. The line, from Ayr to Girvan via those villages and the famous Turnberry Hotel opened in 1903, closed to passengers in 1931, and to freight in 1955. However the northern part, (including this section) from Ayr (Alloway Junction) to Heads of Ayr (for the Butlins Camp) was open to passengers from 1947 to September 1968.
